Making Beeswax Candle Tips - Get the Kids Involved

Making Beeswax Candle Tips - Candles with the Kids

The warm illuminating glow it emits. That sweet and pleasant smell as the candle glimmers. Sigh! Few people are aware of how fun creating beeswax candles can be!

Creating candles from beeswax is a practical but exciting project for the younger ones to learn. In this activity, the younger ones will have nothing to do at all a burning stove or even scorchingly-hot wax.   There is no mess and the amount of items needed for making beeswax candles is just about nil.

Making Beeswax Candles Tips - Items that You Do Need

  • 8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax
  • Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle
  • A small paring knife from your kitchen
  • Flat open surface

How to Make Beeswax Candles

  1. Lay out your sheet of beeswax
  2. Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)

Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.

After laying the wick on the sheet’s edge, fold over an eighth of an inch of wax before you start rolling it. This seam will enclose the wick securely. While rolling the wax forward and having it circle the wick tightly with your finger tips, remember to push it from one side to another. This will be the only time at which you will place any hard pressure while you are making beeswax candle.

An alternative is if you flip over the beeswax, fold down the wax creating a 1/8 inch seam using either the counter corner or a cutting board. Whether you go with the first or the latter, do be sure your efforts produce a textbook-quality seam.

The thickness of your candle is a critical factor when making your candle. To increase the candle’s thickness, use more beeswax. Do this by placing the additional wax sheet edge to edge with the original, melding the pieces together with your thumb. Be careful to roll the beeswax in a straight line finishing only when the last part of the beeswax is wrapped securely around itself.

Press the edges gently down with your thumb once you have reached the end of the beeswax. As you proceed with the candle’s entire length, you’ll be making an imaginary seam.

Pick out what would serve as the best candle top then cut the wick half an inch over the wax. Don’t forget to remove the remaining wick from the bottom.

Although the younger ones might not find these parts enjoyable, you and other parents certainly would. So go ahead, ceremoniously light your glorious achievement, inhale the exotic perfume and enjoy this splendid moment! And as for the kids? Gee - they made their own candle!

The art of making candles is ancient and the things you’re about to do are practically the same things parents in the old days did. Originally, the goal was to have a source of light…a critical requirement in those instances. Most, however, view making candles as a pastime. Or it can be for a variety of reasons. As cited earlier on, a lot of people look upon this project as a recreational pursuit. Sometimes however, it is for giving as a gift on special occasions. One of the most popular craft projects that parents teach to their kids is wax candle making. Of course, let’s not forget about the money you could make. Some people create candles to sell for their own individual business venture.
